Our club? The closest description we can think of is: "It's like a Book Club for writers."
Book clubs have that leather-couch, cosy socks feel--where you all talk about what you love.
We love non-fiction writing, and it would be great to do an MFA in writing or some big writing course, but right now, who has the energy? Life is so busy.
We wanted you to learn and enjoy a writing community in a way that's less...intimidating.
It makes us happy when writing groups are small, supportive, and have free coffee (and at home on Zoom, coffee's always free and just the way we like it--strong, milky, no sugar. Okay, maybe one sugar).
What You Get Out Of Writing Club:
Join the March Writing Club for $98USD (March 1st start)
Here's what you need to know about Writing Club:
We mostly discuss non-fiction, creative non-fiction, and personal essays. That's our main jam flavor.
We meet on Zoom every Tuesday at 4pm CST/ 10pm London Time
(Wednesday morning for Aussies and Kiwis)
We have a 10 minute writing prompt time. (But you can pretend and just add avocado and blue cheese to your grocery list if you really want to). No pressure.
There's a short writing tips session from Kelly, because she can't seem to rid herself of her teacher training. And Ash kicks off the discussion, because he's an extrovert and enjoys public speaking (terrifying as that thought is to most of us.)
The rest of the week we can pop in and out of discussions on em-dashes and argue about "color" vs. "colour" in a Slack group, just for us, where we give each other feedback on writing, and share tips and resources. (optional)
I have a few questions:
I'm really busy. How much time will I need?
If you have 2 hours a week to dedicate to your writing, that's enough to join Writing Club. It's completely up to you how involved you are in the Slack group. You're welcome to just attend the 1 hour Zoom call.
I can't attend the Zoom at that time. Will it be recorded?
We record all Zoom calls (to share within the group only). So if you miss a session you can still watch it.
Will I have to share my writing with other people?
That's up to you. If you're feeling ready to have some encouraging feedback, you're welcome to share your work. But there's no pressure.
Will it be at my level?
Writing Club is aimed at people who already write (published or unpublished). It might be a bit much if you've never written anything before. Have a go at writing some pieces and them join us in a later month.
How big will the group be?
We are limiting it to 20 writers. We find that's big enough for good discussion, but small enough to get to know everyone.
How do I pay?
When you sign up, you'll get an email a few days later to secure your spot. We usually use PayPal.
What we'll cover in March
Week One: The deeper story
Finding the extra layer in your work
Week Two: Your core message
What are you really saying to your audience?
Week Three: Editing for depth
How do you use the editing stage for more than checking spelling and punctuation?
Week Four: Answering writing questions/ Guest
For dynamic learning, we will leave this week free to cover any issues or areas that have come up over the month. We may also have a guest writer or two!
Kelly and Ash, and your new writing friends, will also be available during the week via Slack (or email) to give one-on-one help and encouragement with what you're working on.
After the course, you're welcome to join our larger writing Slack alumni (no extra charge.)
